Why Jump for a Just World?

BIOGRAPHY

Despite her young age, Michelle Barrera has already enjoyed a great deal of success in the world of show jumping. She has received numerous special awards, including the UNSW Sports scholarship in 2003, 2004 and 2005; the Australian Commonwealth Sports Achievement Award in 2003; and the NSW Young Show Jumping Equitation Championship in 2002.

Michelle, who rides for her native Philippines, has competed in numerous World Cup qualifiers and, in 2002, won the Sale World Cup qualifier, making her the youngest rider in the Pacific League’s history to claim the title. Michelle’s success continued when she was the first rider in the Asia Pacific region to qualify for the 2006 World Equestrian Games after winning the NADEC World Cup qualifier and World Equestrian Games qualifier. In 2006, she finished second overall in the Pacific League World Cup standings, making her the first non-Australian from this league to compete at the World Cup Final. Attending the 2006 World Cup Final in Kuala Lumpur, Michelle placed 29th overall riding Kayak, a horse her grandparents purchased for her on the advice of her coaches.

Michelle is a student at the University of New South Wales with a major in psychology and a minor in marketing. When her schedule allows, Michelle enjoys traveling to the Philippines and Malaysia, and visiting her grandparent’s farm. Michelle also volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House and the Starlight Foundation.
