Organization

Founded in 2003, JustWorld is a not-for-profit organization that transforms the lives of children in impoverished communities by funding education and nutrition programs.

Currently serving more than 7,000 children in Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras and the United States. JustWorld International provides a unique opportunity for equestrians and individuals to learn about, experience, and contribute to a global campaign against poverty.

Overview of the Role

The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive of JustWorld International.

The Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for JustWorld’s mission delivery, strategy development and implementation, program excellence and efficacy, stakeholder relationship management, staff management, operations performance, financial leadership and viability, regular compliance, and continuous improvement. S/he will initially develop deep knowledge of the international development and equestrian fields, core programs, operations, and business plans. This professional will represent the organization in the community, working with key stakeholders, philanthropic and community leaders, groups and organizations to build and sustain relationships integral to the support of current programs and long-term sustainability of the Mission.

The Executive Director will be expected to help expand the Board of Directors and guide Board reorganization toward best-practice governance. The Executive Director will be expected to work in partnership with board and advisory members and use board members as advisors. The Board’s main duties are to approve the annual budget, help develop long-term strategic plans, fundraise, and ensure its own succession. The Board will not be not involved in the day-to-day operations of the organization.

Responsibilities Leadership:

  • Leads the development of JustWorld’s strategy, strategic planning in collaboration with the board of directors, and strategy implementation processes.
  • Provides leadership in developing program, organizational, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
  • Develops, maintains, and supports a strong Board of Directors; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for operations.
  • Identifies, assesses, and regularly informs the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization and about the projects JustWorld supports
  • Acts as a spokesperson for the organization and represents the organization at events to enhance the organization's community profile. Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board; provides, in a timely manner, all information for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.

Operational Planning & Management:

  • Assures that the mission of JustWorld leads the strategy, priorities, culture, practices, and operations of the organization.
    • Oversees the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
    • Ensures ongoing programmatic excellence and evaluation.
    • Creates an organizational culture of integrity, caring, commitment, mission-centricity and performance.
  • Sees that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.

Human Resources Planning & Management: ( in collaboration with HR consultant for anything you feel should be in place or needed)

  • Oversees the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff. (in collaboration with HR consultant)
  • Determines staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Recruits, interviews, and selects staff that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further the organization's mission.
  • Establishes a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Implements a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review
    • Coaches and mentors staff as appropriate to improve performance.
    • Disciplines staff when necessary using appropriate techniques; releases staff when necessary using appropriate and legally defensible procedures.
  • Encourages staff and volunteer development and education, and assists program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.

Program Planning & Management:

  • Oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization's programs and services.
  • Ensures that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board.
    • Leads development of strategy for JustWorld project partners.
    • Monitors the day-to-day delivery of the programs of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
    • Oversees the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects. 
    • Develops new initiatives.

Financial Planning & Management:

  • Builds a financially viable, sustainable organization with the resources to meet current needs and projected program growth.
  • Works with the staff and the Board in preparing a budget; sees that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  • Manages organization expenditure and cash flow.
  • Makes corrections to budgets, plans, priorities, and expenditures as necessary. o Provides the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization. o Approves expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board according to the approved budget.

    Fundraising
  • Builds and maintains an effective and multi-faceted funding-development process and pipeline that provides a consistent and predictable flow of revenue into the organization such that strategic and operating plans can be realized.
  • Expands revenue-generating mechanisms and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion.
  • Participates in identifying and cultivating corporate, individual, and foundation sponsors.
  • Researches funding sources, oversees the development of fundraising plans, and writes funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization.
  • Participates in fundraising activities as appropriate.
  • Oversee and participate in the annual Gala, the largest fundraising event for the organization.

Communications & Community Relations:

  • Actively engages and energizes JustWorld Board members, event committees, corporate partners, and funders.
  • Deepens and refines all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations—with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
    • Builds external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
    • Creates value and a clear strategy for corporate partnerships.
    • Builds partnerships in existing and new markets, establishing relationships with funders and community leaders.
  • Develops and strengthens stakeholder relationships along all points of interaction, building energy, enthusiasm, and tangible support for the work and mission of JustWorld; serves as a visible and credible champion of the organization and its mission within constituent communities, related-sector nonprofits and philanthropic organizations, businesses and equestrian groups.
  • Participates in community events, seeks involvement in professional and civic organizations, and identifies opportunities to strengthen the presence of JustWorld in the general and philanthropic community.
  • Working in close collaboration with the Founder in leveraging partnerships to continue to grow the organization.

Risk Management:

  • Sets high professional standards for the organization; maintains a healthy and safe operating environment; meets all regulatory and compliance requirements of a nonprofit agency and employer.
  • Identifies and evaluates the risks to the organization's people (beneficiaries, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implements measures to control risks.
  • Ensures that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage; ensure that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions and limitations of the insurance coverage.
  • Jointly, with designated officers, conducts official correspondence of the organization and executes legal documents.
  • Ensures that personnel, donor, and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained.
  • Ensures that the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments.
  • Ensures that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed.

Development:

  • Develops and implements a Comprehensive Development Plan to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the organization; establishes philanthropic goals, determines strategies, establishes benchmarks, presents the Development Plan to the Board and reports on its progress.
  • Advances the philanthropic position of the organization through various Development Programs including: major gifts program, planned giving program, annual giving, campaigns, foundation and grants development, and donor and prospect relations.
  • Works with the Board to identify annual funding priorities, assists in the creation of the annual funding plan, writes compelling and inspirational Case for Support based on the same and presents cases during cultivation and solicitation meetings.
  • Works in collaboration with consultants, financial and legal advisors as required for campaigns, planned giving programs, and major gift initiatives.

  • Maintains an ongoing donor relations program with emphasis on major gift development, conducts personal visits, schedules luncheons and meetings, makes personal calls, produces correspondence and other forms of communication.
  • Prepares cultivation and solicitation materials and publications including: case statements, proposals, grants, newsletters, brochures, videos, solicitation materials and other collateral materials as needed.
  • Develops and manages a corporate and foundation grant development program including research, identification of potential funders, and cultivation activities directed to trustees and representatives; prepares proposals, makes presentations, and develops reports as required.
  • Works effectively with the donor and gift management database, establishes and enforces policies and accounting procedures for the accurate and proper receipt, acknowledgment and posting of charitable gifts, assures the timely acknowledgment of gifts, and accuracy of donor files and audit trail for each gift.

Key Qualifications

  • 4-year college degree required; a master’s degree in nonprofit management or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Proven track history of supervisory management experience leading a nonprofit organization & experience working directly with a Board of Directors.
    • International experience.
    • Familiarity with the equestrian industry.
    • Solid experience of nonprofit management including strategic planning, fundraising, stakeholder relationship development, program development and management, operational and financial management, organizational leadership and compliance; context should include a mix of paid staff and volunteer support.

  • Ability to convey a vision of JustWorld’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers, and donors
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
    • A successful track record of fundraising from multiple revenue sources.
    • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven evaluation.
    • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.

  • Proven ability to make discernable impact on mission and stakeholder priorities in nonprofits and commercial organizations.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and motivational skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Knowledge/experience of finance and accounting.
    • Demonstrated accomplishments in fundraising, including donor relations and major gift development.

  • Excellent computer skills including: Microsoft Office, QuickBooks; Experience with Gift/Donor Management programs preferred.
    • Experience with websites and social media.
    • Ability to sustain effective partnerships with other organizations.
    • Ability to work full-time in JustWorld office in Wellington, FL.
    • Ability to travel as required to JustWorld partner events and project partner sites.
